Taste Cumbria at Egremont Crab Fair

Egremont Crab Fair's 750th year intends to promote healthy eating and well-being to families and junior schools using Taste Cumbria to reinvigorate the fair by broadening its appeal. We wish to include Taste Cumbria with the hope to inspire, inform and encourage our community, from young to old and embrace a healthier approach to food. This will help to maintain well-being and promote a better lifestyle.

The Egremont Crab Fair will host the very popular Taste Cumbria event at the next Crab fair in September 2017. The food festival will focus on inspiring and informing people about the benefits of fresh and healthy food choices and celebrate the wealth of local produce which make a healthier lifestyle a real possibility. In addition, the Taste Cumbria event, will launch a series of workshops and learning interventions in partnership with local schools and community groups, to be commissioned by The Crab Fair Committee. These workshops and the accompanying publicity/marketing campaign will deliver healthy eating advice, information and resources to the local schools and communities of West Copeland and will support and add value to the existing efforts of Copeland Borough Council , Cumbria County Council and various third sector groups in the promotion of health and well being in the region. The Healthy Eating project will run between September 2017 and March 2018.
Egremont Crab Fair and Sports was established in 1267, which makes it one of the oldest fairs in the world. It combines ancient and traditional events with modern attractions in a unique way, attracting visitors from all over the world. Events start in the early morning and continue into the late evening. The Crab Fair is run entirely by volunteers, who give up their time throughout the year to help raise funds for the main event in September. These events and the fair itself are part of the cultural heritage of the area and contribute to creating a Sense of Place, bolstering Civic Pride, supporting Community Cohesion and providing a much needed economic stimulus to the towns traders. The 2017 event will be the 750th anniversary of the Fair which is a cause for celebration.
