The 17th Century coaching inn, now a thriving Community Pub on the main street in Great Broughton looks drab and uncared for from the outside and badly needs painting. This would improve the appearance not only of the pub but of Broughton main street and the centre of the village.
The grant would fund the redecoration of the pub exterior. The work would be undertaken by a local contractor aided by some of the volunteers who manage the Punch Bowl to keep costs down.
The Punch Bowl Inn, Great Broughton was registered as a not-for-profit community organisation in April 2013 under the rules of the Industrial and Provident Society Act 1965 following the death of the previous owner. 60 local "shareholders" contributed funds to start up the business which is run by a group of volunteers from the village. Profits arising from the operation of the Community Pub are distributed annually to local village organisations and charities. This cosy and very traditional village pub has established a good reputation for Cumbrian real ales and features in the Good Pub & Beer Guides. The premises are available and are widely used by local groups for committee meetings, quizzes and social events free of charge and is a thriving Community hub.
